The N-factor is generally used as a wider term to describe the relationship between molar mass and equivalent mass.
eg. Molar mass of a substance/ n-factor= equivalent mass of the substance.
It's also used as, normality = molarity * n -factor.
So, the n-factor for an acid is called its basicity, eg. H2SO4, n=2 as it can furnish 2 protons.
Similarly, n-factor for base is its acidity, eg. n-factor for Ca(OH)2 is 2, as it furnishes 2 OH- ions.
For salts, it's the valency eg: Ca2+ as in CaCl2 has n=2
For redox reactions it's the no. Of electrons transferred, KMnO4 (Mn+7) goes to Mn+2 in acidic medium, so it's n-factor is n=5.
