Both 8253 and 8254, as described in the 1980 Intel ‘Component Data Catalogue’ publication are Programmable Interval Timers (PTI) that are used for binary or BCD counting.
Basic differences between them are:
Whereas 8253 has an operating frequency of 0-2.6 MHz, 8254 is operated at a frequency that ranges between 0-10 MHz.
8253 uses N-MOS Technology and does not support read-back command whereas 8254 works on H-MOS technology and supports read-back command.
The last difference being that whereas in 8253, the read and write command of the same counter cannot be interwoven together, in 8254 it is possible to interweave the read and write command of the same counter.
