What is the difference between a deflection made by the electric field that made by the magnetic field?

.J. Thomson determined the charge (e) to mass (m) ratio, e/m for the electron, using a device in which, he applied perpendicular electric and magnetic fields of a certain magnitude to a beam of electrons.


When the electric and magnetic field are not applied on the beam of electrons (which are negatively charged) will not be deflected, and they will continue to follow a straight path, and to be detected at point P on the screen.

When we apply electric field only, the electrons will be deflected and detected at the point Pe and in the presence of the magnetic field alone, the electrons will be deflected downwards and be detected at the point Pm.

Now, if both fields are switched on, and keeping their magnitude so, that there is no deflection, which means, the electrons will hit the screen at point P again. This occurs when the two fields exert equal and opposite forces on the electrons.
