A full moon is when the moon is on the opposite side of the earth from the sun. The sunlight hits the moon straight on, as seen from earth. A new moon is when the moon is between the earth and the sun. The moon is been lit on the side that we don’t see, the side we see is in shadows and only visible during the day.

The moon completes a full orbit around the earth in a little over 27 days. Full moon and new moon are extreme opposites of the orbit, so the full moon and the new moon are just short of two weeks apart.
