What is the difference between a gerund and an infinitive?

example – "Stop smoking."Infinitive – a verb in its base form precede by the word "to".
example – "Stop to smoke."In the example sentences above, both forms can be used, but the meanings are not the same."Stop smoking." means terminate the action of smoking. "Stop to smoke." means stop an activity in progress for the purpose of starting the action of smoking.

gerunds- a gerund is a part of a verb( ending in- ing) which has a verbal  function as well as a noun.it may be the  subject, complement or object of a sentence or of the object of preposition.gerunds are used adverbially

infinitives- the sentence- they always try to flatter her
in this sentence, to flatter has no subject, hence it is not limited by the number and person. it simply names the action denoted by the verb. it is called the infinitive
