We are often confused what exactly the difference between a democracy and a republic is.  Both seem to have parliaments, elections etc.

A Republic means an independent sovereign country run by a government formed by representatives elected by the citizen or by some other manner.  The government leaders/employees exercise power  according to the rule of law.  The country has a constitution/law everyone has to abide by.

Democracy is similar. The manner in which representatives (who form government) are chosen is different between a republic and a democracy.

Our world contains more republics than democracies.  UK and Spain are democracies.  They are not republics.  UK has queen, prince (partial monarchy).  India, Canada, USA are both republic and democracy.  Syria and Iran are republics.  Israel is a democracy and republic.  USSR and Germany are also republics.

Democracy : Government (or Rule) is of the people, for the people and by the people.

Republic: Government (or Rule) is by the constitution (law), of the republic, and for the people.

  Understand the wording carefully.
