what is the difference between airbrush and brush tool

I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but here goes:
When colouring on the computer, I can't tell the difference in effects between the pencil, brush and airbrush tools for the most part. The pencil and paintbrush have the exact same options (I'm using The GIMP), and the airbrush only adds two more for rate and pressure (can someone explain to me exactly what effect those controls have? And why I'd use that instead of adjusting the brush's opacity?). Is there something really subtle here that I'm missing?
As good as GIMP is in my opinion - in reality it seems that at the moment the three are exactly the same tool.
But I actually dont think Photoshop is any different in that aspect.
For quick retouching & GIMP specific things like changing colour acording to pressure & a few more things .. GIMP is really good & lightweight on the system .
But if you are after emulation of pencil - brushes -knives etc in digital then it is at the moment in my opinion very much rubbish.
Corel Painter or TwistedBrush or ... will be a lot better & more fun to use.
