Since alcohol is non toxic, alcohol thermometers are much safer to use than the mercury thermometers. Alcohol thermometers can be used to measure very low temperatures. Sincemercury has a higher boiling point thanalcohol, mercury thermometer can be used to measure high temperatures

- Mercury remains in liquid state for a wide range of temperature.
- It does not stick to glass.
It is relatively easy to see because it's silvery grey colour.
- Alcohol is cheaper and less harmful than mercury.
- It can measure much lower temperatures (up to - 115°C) than mercury.
Alcohol thermometers cannot measure temperatures higher than 78°C, whereas mercury thermometers can measure much higher temperatures.
