What is the difference between an ambassador and a diplomat?

An Ambassador is the highest ranking diplomat accredited to a country. A diplomat is anyone in the foreign service posted to another country. A diplomat is still just a public servant. An Ambassador, however, has a status closer to a minister and is more than a public servant.
