Idiom is just a phrase which has no proper meaning in it.
Example : Once in a blue moon
This is an idiom used to express a situation where the given incident occurs very rarely.
Example : Raj visits the zoo once in a blue moon.
Meaning : Raj visits the zoo very rarely.
Proverb is also similar to an idiom where it is used since generations. Like they also are phrases which convey some amount of meaning to a situation,
Proverb : Stitch in time saves nine
Meaning : A deed or doing in the correct time will save us from trouble.
Example : Ram completed his homework in time due to which he escaped punishment.
Ram had stitched in time to save himself from ninth hour.
