Answer:

A broken wire or an "open" (off) switch both leave gaps in a circuit preventing electrons from traveling from one side of the power source to the other. Thus, electrons will not flow. This situation is called an open circuit.

A closed (on) switch means that the circuit through the switch is connected.

Open Circuit:

an electrical circuit that is not complete.

Close circuit:

Closed circuit means a complete electrical connection around which current flows or circulates.

Difference:

Circuit which is not complete is considered an open circuit.

A complete circuit which is not performing any actual work can still be a closed circuit.

A circuit is considered to be closed when electricity flows from an energy source to the desired endpoint of the circuit.
