since a moving object often changes it's speed during its motion it is common to distinguish between the average speed and the instantaneous speed. AVERAGE SPEED the average is all instantaneous speeds found simply by a distance /time ratio

According to the definition of both words,

Average speed- the total distance traveled divided by the total time elapsed (http://www.dictionary.com/browse/average-speed, )

Mean- mean is the average of the numbers ( http://www.mathsisfun.com/definitions/mean.html)

they are the same.
