baking soda is a single compound:sodiumhygrogencarbonate and baking powder is a mixture of sodium hydrogencarbonate and a solid,edible acid.

no
baking powder is used in making cakes,bread etc as a raising agent.
we can not use baking soda as a raising agent it gives a bitter taste.
