burning of candle is both physical as well as chemical change, because in melting of gas no new substance is formed, so it is a physical reaction, while burning of thread produces co2, heat and light, so it is a chemical change.

on the other hand burning of coal produces co2 along with heat and light, so it is a chemical change as co2 is being formed as a new substance.
c + o2→co2
