What is the difference between By-election and Mid-term election?
The differences between By-elections and Mid-term elections are as follows:-
By-Election-
- By-Elections are held to fill a vacancy caused by resignation or death of a member.
- It is held for only one constituency.
- Example-By-Elections were held in Andhra Pradesh when former Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy died in a helicopter crash.
Mid-Term Election-
- A Mid-Term Election is held when a State Legislative Assembly or Lok Sabha is dissolved before the completion of its normal five year term.
- It is held for all the constituencies.
- Example-In India,Mid-term elections were held when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was chosen as the prime minister. His government felt twice, one after 13 days and second after 13 months.
