Chat and Email are two new communication media that was created along with the internet. In the most basic, the two are very similar, carrying messages in textual form from one device to another. The main difference between the two is with the speed that they occur.

Email is a way of sending individual messages to people using an email server to relay the message. Because the server holds the messages for a person until he or she retrieves them, email can be sent whether or not a person is online.

IM is short for Instant Messaging and needs the users to be logged in to the same server. Messages are delivered instantly.

· Chat is typically software dependent while Email is not. Chat needs accounts on the same provider while Email does not. Chat is able to convey voice and audio while Email cannot.
