Whereas, Chloride is an ion of chlorine. ... Chlorine atoms gain one electron to become a chloride ion (Cl−). An ion cannot remain in a free state, and has to combine with another element or elements to form a compound. chlorine is rarely found by itself and is usually a result of direct or indirect oxidation by oxygen.

Cl2 => 1 Chlorine atom

Cl has a valency of 1, so it needs one more atom

to complete its valency and achieve stability.

But 2Cl means, that both the ions exist separately.

Cl2 is the designation for diatomic chlorine.

It shows that two chlorine molecules are bonded together,

and it represents ONE molecule. Cl-Cl

Consider Zn ion with a charge of +2.

It will readily combine with with 2Cl to form Cl2.... that is, ZnCl2.

Now here, ZnCl2 is a molecule made of three atoms bonded together

unlike before when 2Cl and Zn existed independently as ions and

had no bonds between them.
