Mixed cropping, also known as inter cropping is the practice of cultivating two or three different but complementary crops on the same portion of land. This practice takes the advantages of the uniqueness of each crop to make use of diverse natural and ecological resources present in the soil to maximize yield and increase output per crop which not not have been possible with the cultivation of a single crop.

A very good example of mixed cropping in in tropical agriculture is the cultivation of cassava, cereals and legumes on the same parcel of land. Cassava requires a lot of space and nutrients for root growth while legumes are nitrogen fixing and also cover crops which conserve moisture. Cereals are early harvesting and their stalk and dry matter left on the soil still leaves the soil rich with nutrients.

Crop rotation on the other hand is the practice of growing on a parcel of land different crops in sub plots and rotating the cultivation of these crops among the sub plots. E.g In a hectare of field, divided into 3 cultivation plots, for season 1,
