The peninsular plateau is divided by Narmada river into 2 parts.
- Malwa Plateau: It is bounded by Aravalli range in the south. Aravalli range is one of the oldest range in the world. In the east Malwa Plateau extends upto the Chotta Nagpur plateau.
- Deccan Plateau: The peninsular plateau extending to the south of Vidhyas is called the Deccan Plateau. The western edge of the Deccan Plateau is called western ghats. The highest peak in this region is the Anaimudi hills. The eastern edge of the Deccan Plateau is called the eastern ghats.
