Direct Election: A process of choosing political leader where voters directly cast ballots for the person or political party that they desire to see elected, further the method by which winner of this direct election is chosen depends on the electoral system.

Examples of directed elected bodies are the United States of Representatives, MP's (member of parliament) MLA's etc.

Indirect Elections: In this system, voters do not choose between candidates but elect the persons who will then make the choice.

Examples of indirect elections are The election of United States President and Vice President.
