A discovery is recognizing something that already exists for the first time that nobody has found before. For example, how Christopher Columbus discovered the Americans.
An invention is creating something totally new with one's own ideas and development. For example, how Thomas Edison invented the light bulb.

People generally get confused in these two words and understand them as same.They know the meaning but dont care to think deep
Discovery is when the thing is there already but eas not founded out.
ex - Vasco da game discovered INDIA
Invention is when the thing is made by anyone which didnt has the existence.
ex - Indians invented algebra
