Distance:

  • Distance is the length of actual path travelled by an object in the given interval of time.
  • Distance travelled by an object depends upon the path followed by the particle in going from initial position to final position.
  • Distance is always positive.
  • Distance is always greater than or equal to its displacement in any direction.
  • Scalar quantity

Displacement:

  • Shortest distance between the initial and final position of a moving object in a particular direction.
  • Does not depend on path followed.
  • May be positive, negative or Zero.
  • Vector quantity
  • Always less than or equal to distance travelled by the body.
