A mechanical device is analogue and you must decide just where a finger pointer is indicating. They also have a mechanical magnifying mechanism inside them which suffers from friction and sticktion. With the electronic device there will be a digital readout to make thing simple. You can usually also set tolerances with the digitals and any out of specification components will be indicated.
