Rather than try to go through a long list of examples, lets try to define what is a “tool” and what is an “equipment.” Traditionally, a tool is a small device that a human can use to amplify his physical or mental abilities. We generally think of tools as controlled and wielded by an individual human. But, is there a upper bound to the size and power of a tool? Does a tool become something else if you can’t lift it yourself, so a screwdriver is a tool, but a metal lathe or a railroad track laying machine is definitely not a tool? A hydroelectric powerplant can be controlled by one person twisting a few control knobs or stroking a keyboard, so is that facility a tool or an equipment? (And did you notice me sneaking in another term, “facility,” just to complicate your thinking?)
Ultimately, why worry about shadings of meaning; there’s just you, tools and the rest of the World.
