Sympathy means just feeling sad for others. But whereas empathy is the ability to understand another person's feelings. It is the ability to experience the same feeling of suffering or at least understand the other person's perspective. It's one earnest desire to reach out to someone to lesson his or her suffering. So think whether empathy is needed for them or just your sympathy.
