Ethnic conflict in Belgium was between the Dutch speaking community and French Speaking community, and ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka was between Sinhalese people and Sri Lankan Tamil people
Explanation:
Belgium's Policy
- Belgium has a populace of a little more than a crore in Europe. The racial distribution of this country is complicated. In the Flemish region, 59 percent of the total population speaks the Dutch.
- In the Wallonia region, about 40% live and speak French. One percent of Belgians also understand German. In Brussels, the capital, 80 percent speak French and 20 percent speak Netherlands.
- The minority group of French speakers was relatively prosperous and influential. This made the Dutch furious. Because of these disparities between the 2 ethnic-cultures there were problems between the 1950s and 1960.
Sri Lanka's Policy
- A set of majoritarian policy measures in Sri Lanka were adopted by the democratically elected govt. because they wanted Sinhala supremacy.
- Some of the measures that were taken were making Sinhala as the main/official language and following preferential policies that ensured jobs only for Sinhalese in govts and universities, and to promote and foster Buddhism.
- The Tamils of Sri Lanka felt humiliated by this. Consequently, the Sri Lankan Tamils formed political parties and began to fight for official language recognition for Tamil.
- Several political groups had been founded in the 1980s. In northern & eastern parts of Sri Lanka, they requested an independent Tamil Eelam (state). All of this soon became a civil war which exacerbated the nation's misery.
