Characteristic is a particular form or a particular function, for example. Human being have 5 fingers in each hand, thus presence of 5 fingers in each hand is a characteristic. similarly, animals can run, but trees like banyan tree cannot run, is also a characteristic.

Evolution on the other hand refers to a slow, gradual and continuous process by which the previously existing organisms develop into existing living organisms.
