1. Fragmentation occurs in multi-cellular organisms with simple body organisation.

1. Regeneration occurs in fully differentiated multi-cellular organisms with complex body organization.

2. In fragmentation, an organism breaks into pieces and each piece develops into new individual.

2. In regeneration organisms if breaks into pieces, each piece may or may not develop into new individual.

3. No specialised cells are involved in fragmentation.

3. In regeneration, specialised cells proliferate and form a mass of cells. The cells from the mass differentiate to form different cells types and tissues.

✳️ Following fragmentation, each fragmented part develops into a separate individual .


✳️ Fragmentation is seen in many organisms, including some types of fungi, plants, and annelids , flatworms and sea stars .

✳️ Organisms like spirogyra, which are made of filaments, or long, Ribbon like structures, also produce this way .

✳️ The filament grows as the cells that constitutes it grow and divide .

✳️ Sometimes, the filament breaks into two or more parts and each such part grows into an individual .


Regeneration :

✳️ Regeneration is a modified form of fragmentation .


✳️ Organisms such as Hydra, earthworms, flatworms and starfish can regrow or Re generate lost or damaged part of their body .


✳️ These organisms can also give rise to new individuals from the broken body parts .


✳️ There are other organisms which can regenerate certain broken parts .


✳️ For example, a lizard can grow back its tail and the grasshopper its legs, but they cannot give rise to complete new individuals .
