GENERAL ELECTIONS

1)These elections are held after a fixed time interval

2)These elections are conducted throughout the country on same day.

3)These elections are conducted when the tenure of the present government gets over.


BY ELECTIONS

1)These elections can be held at any time whenever necessary.

2)These elections are conducted only in the required constituencies.

3)These elections can be held whenever there is a seat vacancy, death or resignation of the MP or MLA or any other emergency in the constituency .

Elections is your regular polling process that always happens on a set date. By-election is a special election that is held when a vacancy comes up due to either the death of the candidate, disqualification of the candidate or resignation of the candidate.

By-election happenes just for that particular vacant seat. New elected member then occupies the seat for remaining period of the term.


General Election: happened after a certain period of time. Like after every 5 years in case of India.
