Locusts and grasshoppers have generally same appearance but they behave differently. Locusts exists in two different behavioural states (solitary and gregarious) whereas grasshoppers do not. Grasshoppers can hop but locusts can fly as they are the swarming phase. When the population density is low, locusts behave as individuals, much like grasshoppers.
