Angiosperms are flowering whereas the gymnospermsare non-flowering plants. In evolution, gymnospermsare more primitive than angiosperms. Gymnospermswere the first seed plants and they bear their ovules and seeds exposed. The ovules are on scales, which are arranged in the cone-like structures.

Pollination is the transfer of pollen to the female organs of seed plants. In flowering plants (angiosperms, or "covered seeds"), immature seeds (ovules) are located within carpels. In contrast, nonflowering seed plants have uncovered ovules to which the pollen is transferred, making these "naked seeds" (gymnosperms).

As in gymnosperms, the ovule becomes a seed, encasing the embryo and endosperm in a seed coat. But unlike gymnosperms, in angiosperms the ovarycontaining the ovules develops into a fruit after fertilization.
