•HEART WOOD:

- Heart wood is called DURAMEN

- It is centrally located pith.

- More durable wood.

- Microbial more resistant.

- darkly colored

- Secondary metabolites such as tannins, resins, cutin deposition occurs.

- Commercially more useful (timber wood)

- Vessels are laterally compressed.

- In heart wood xylem parenchyma produces tyroses/ tracheal plugs and block the cavities of vessels.

- no water conduction, it provides only mechanical strength.

- it is functionally inactive.

- sap wood is known as AlBUMEN.

- peripheral located wood.

- less durable wood.

- microbial less resistant

- light coloured

- secondary metabolites deposition not occurs

- provides both mechanical strength and do water conduction.

- it is functionally more active.
