Properties of Aromatic compounds
(i) All carbon atoms must be Sp2 Hybridised.
(ii) They must be CYCLIC
(iii) Conjugated system with complete delocalisation of pi electrons with (4n+ 2) pi electrons.
If n= 0,1,2,3..... ; (4n+2) = 2,6,10,14.... - These are Hückel Numbers.
Point 3 basically means that the no. of pi electrons in the compound must be a HÜCKEL NUMBER.(2,6,10......)
Pyridine, Thiophene, Furan are examples of heterocyclic aromatic compounds. They follow the above mentioned 3 points.
Oxirane, oxetane etc are non aromatic heterocyclic as they don’t follow these points.
