The series of compuond which have same general formula in chemistry is known as homologous series.

Alkyl Group is an alkane missing one hydrogen.

homologous series is a series of organic compounds containing one type of functional group and differing only by (ch2)unit.while as alkyl group is a branch of a carbon chain containing carbon and hydrogen
