Ionic compounds are (usually) formed when a metal reacts with a nonmetal (or a polyatomic ion). Covalent compounds are formed when two nonmetals react with each other

Ionic Compounds :
Compounds are formed from strong electrostatic interactions
They attract each other and form ionic bond
No definite shape
Have high melting point
Examples : Sodium chloride (NaCl) and Sodium Iodide (NaI)
Covalent compounds :
These have bonds where electrons are shared between atoms
A form of chemical bonding between non-metallic atoms
Definite shape
Low melting point
