Karate is one of of the "martial" or fighting arts from southeast asia. It originated in Okinawa as a system of self-defense based on the native Okinawan fighting art called "Te" combined with fighting techniques learned from China.

Simply put, the life protection art that Karate was originally is Karate-Jutsu. Often Karate is mentioned without using the terms "Do", or "Jutsu". The old Karate Jutsu was the Karate used only for life protection and was applied so as to maim or kill an attacker. Karate -Do is what most Karate is now. As someone pointed out Karate-Do is Karate that is taught with more moral responsibility as well as application that stops, but does not injure the attacker any more than necessary.
Basically all Karate is either Karate-Jutsu, Or Karate-Do. but as I said most of the time it is only referred to as simply Karate.....
