Answer:

Fate is a the regular timeline & goal which doesn't change and Karma is the action taken by you to the journey towards it.

Both fate and karma are unavoidable but, you have control over karma.

When you control the karma you can change the fate eventually.

Explanation:

The story is long and little informal. Don't mind it. Just absorb the essence of it.

Rishi Markendya (The author of Maha-Mritunjaya Mantra) was supposed to have a short life span. [This is Fate]

The story goes like this:

His father has no child so, he worshiped Lord Shiva for years. [This was Karma]

Lord Shiva got pleased by his devotion and agreed to give him a boon to have a son [Karma Changing Fate]

However, Lord Shiva put a condition. The condition was:

Either he can have a son who will live long but will have minimal intellect

or

He can have a son who will be very very intellect but, will have very short life span.

Rishi Markendya father choose the second option and Rishi Markendya was born.

Rishi Markendya was exceptionally intelligent and a dedicate Shiv-Bhakt. He spent most of his time in learning and Shiv-bhakti. [Again Karma]

In just few years his time to live was over and Yam (The messenger of Death Lord Yamraj) came to take his life.

Rishi Markendya was unwilling to die and go with Yam so, he hold the Shivling and refused to go.

Due to his devotion and his hold on Shivling, Yam was unable to take his life. [Karma defeating the Fate]

Finally, Yamraj himself came to take his life. Unfortunately during the attempt his lasso captured both Rishi Markendya and the Shivling.

This action upset the Lord Shiva as HE can’t be destroyed and lasso was supposed to work every time. So, one has to go. [Bad Karma for Yamraj]

Lord Shiva killed the Yamraj. However, revived him later. [Unexpected Fate due to unexpected Karma]

Due to all these event and Rishi Markendya devotion Lord Shiva gave him the boon of longer life. [Karma defeated the Fate again]

Though Fate and Karma seems interconnected and often confusing, one should put his/her effort and focus on Karma.

Good Karma has the power to bring positive changes.
