There are two types of propogation of particles of the material medium to pass on the energy In the form of wave :-
1) Longitudinal
In this the displacement of the particles of the medium from the mean position is in the direction of the propogation of the wave.
Eg:- Particles of air when a sound wave is in propogation.
2) Transverse
In this the displacement of the particles of the medium from the mean position is perpendicular to the direction of propogation of the wave disturbance.
Eg:- Wave on a string
