Difference between Mahalwari system and Ryotwari system are given below:
Mahalwari system-
- The proposal of Mahalwadi system was first introduced by 'Halt McKenzie'.
- Under this arrangement, the village community had the collective authority on the land.
- This proposal was provided legal form by regulation of 1822 AD. The whole 'Mahal' or 'Area' was collectively responsible for collecting the government levy.
- This system was first implemented in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Punjab.
Ryotwari system-
- The Ryotwari land tax system was first implemented in 1792 AD in the 'Baramahal' district of Madras.
- Under this arrangement, the government's rayat was directly linked. In the absence of non-payment of land tax, the landlord had to be deprived of the right to land ownership.
- The Ryotwari system was implemented in Madras and Bombay (present-day Mumbai) and in most parts of Assam.
- Farmers were not allowed to go to court against levy more taxes in this system.
