Answer:

There are two types of watches – quartz and mechanical. Quartz watches are powered by a battery while mechanical watches are powered by the carefully regulated release of energy from a wound spring and use purely mechanical components to keep time. Mechanical watches are either manual or self-winding.

All kinds of watches work on a certain periodic event. The earliest clocks measured time with the help  of a pendulum. Today most of us use quartz watches. Quartz is a mineral found in earth’s crust. The  quartz crystal used in watches is man-made. These watches are very accurate. Quartz has a unique  property; it oscillates when subjected to a small amount of electric current. The internationally  accepted SI unit for time is second. In our country, the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) situated at  New Delhi is responsible for maintaining the national standards for all the SI units of measurements  including time.  An atomic clock is used to maintain the accurate standard time of our nation. It can measure time  intervals with an accuracy of one- millionth of a second. The atomic clock works on the radiation  emitted by ceasium atoms. The ‘bip’ sound relayed by the Doordarshan television channel just before  the national news bulletin in the television is actually a magnified sound o the atomic clock at the NPL,  New Delhi.
