80Hg) and mercurous ion in terms of the fundamental particles?

Answer:

the atomic no. of mercury is 80 and the mass no is 201 o the no. of e=80 no. of =80 an the no. of n=121

taking a simpler element say O

the atomic no is 8 so p=e=8 and the mass no. is 16{p+n=8+8=16] so n=8

therefore we can say tht the electronic configuration of O is 2,6

but an O ion will hv 10 electrons so as to fill the outermost shell completely since O atom has only 6 electrons in its outermost shell it has to gain 2 more electrons in the outermost shell to complete its octet.therefore O atom will become O^-2 .it will have a '-' sign as it has gained 2 electrons.

but it will have only 8 protons as the O atom it will be the same.

so the no. of electrons will only change in an ion tht is from an atom to an ion.

we can also see the same in Cl atom and Cl ion.

if they ask u to find the ions in a given table then,u must see the no of electrons and the no of protons if it is diff tht means it is an ion.
