Modern art" refers to any art that was created during the period from 1860 through the 1970s. It is a category of time, and encompasses a huge quantity of different genres and styles and periods of art.
"Abstract art" is technically a style of art wherein a realistic subject is reduced (abstracted) to its basics of structure. Below is a wonderful series of Picasso prints in which Picasso gradually abstracts a realistic drawing of a bull down to its essential elements until it's merely the gesture that is bull.
