Plains are flatlands. Plains that occur at high altitudes are often called steppes. Mountains are elevated lands with sharp variations in altitude. Mountains are usually formed by interactions between tectonic plates or volcanic activity.

Mountains are parts of continents rising above the rest of the land and having conical peaks and steep slopes whereas a plain is a relatively flat and a low-lying land surface with least difference between it's highest and lowest points
