A national festival is one which celebrates a national holiday or a specific culture, for example, Chinese New Year, 4th of July. A religious festival celebrates a religious event or time period for example Mardi Gras.
Sometimes national and religious festivals combine as some religious festival lose the “religious meaning” through the secularism of the holiday. An example of this are Christmas festivities, which while Christians celebrates the birth of Christ, others celebrate the giving of gifts, etc.
in short...
National Festival - Which is related to the country / nation or patriotism.
For example - Independence day, birthday of any freedom fighter or any memorable day
Religious Festival - Which is related to any particular religion.
For example - Christmas (Christianity), Eid (Islam), Diwali (Hinduism), Guru Purab (Sikhism), Buddha Purnima or Vesak (Buddhism).
