During the fractional distillation of crude petroleum one of the distillates is diesel that is used to run cars, lorries and buses. The distillate thus obtained on refining gives us the fuel that we buy from petrol pumps. As all fuels cause pollution, the extent of pollution caused by diesel is reduced by further refining diesel oil to conform to medium and high speed compression ignition engines operating above 750 rpm in commercial vehicles, stationary diesel engines, locomotives and pumps etc. The latter category of fuel reduces environmental pollution and is used in engines that meet the latest quality specifications.
