I'm not sure. Maybe, a pet name is the name of your dog, cat, parrot, tiger, gorilla or whateva. Where as a nick name is an alternative name

Nicknames can be used by anyone or are social names. Whereas pet names are intimate names and can only be used by one individual. For example, your first name is Siddharth, your nickname is Sid (which is known to your office friends even), and your girlfíend calls you Honey, which is your pet name.
