the photosphere is the surface from which light ceases to scatter well (and is essentially the edge of the Sun as seen in visible light).
The chromosphere lies above the photosphere and is a region where the gas is reasonably transparent and yet contains enough excited hydrogen for its H-alpha emission (red) to contribute to what we see.
So at the limb of the Sun we see a faint reddish layer atop an optically dense surface.Source(s):
