There are some distinct differences in what is referred to as the "physical" and what is called the "physiological." Understanding what is physical and what are physiological helps scientists and medical professionals to determine roots causes of a variety of conditions manifested in humans and in nature. While physical refers to the "body," physiological refers to the "functions" in the body. The physical and physiological characteristics are important in understanding such subjects as development, effects, addictions and traits among humans and all other species.

• Cell wall covers the cell membrane and forms the outer covering.

• Cell membrane is partially permeable but cell wall is completely permeable.

• Cell membrane do not contain cellulose, cell wall does.

• Cell wall is elastic, cell membrane is not.

• Cell wall controls turgidity of a cell, plasma membrane does not.

• Cell wall made up of peptidoglygan is present in a bacteria.

• Cell wall made up of chitin is present in fungi.

• Cell wall is metabolically inactive but cell membrane is metabolically active.
