• Adaptations to the water environment are of two types - primary aquatic adaptations which comprise primitive gill-breathing vertebrates like fishes, and secondary aquatic adaptations which are developed as in reptiles and mammals.
• All fishes are primarily aquatic animals. Secondary Aquatic Animals are those animals whose ancestors were lung-breathing territory animals, departed to the water for some intention and eventually brought adapted to reside in the aquatic environment, are Called secondary aquatic animals.
• Adaptation is the physical or behavioural trait of an organism that assists an organism to withstand adequately the encircling environment. Living stuff is adapted to the environment they live in. This is because they possess special characteristics that assist them to overcome.
