What is the difference between rate of percolation and the amount of water retained?

percolation refers to the amount of water seeping down while the amount of water retained refers to amount of water held.Suppose for ex: if u pour about 1000ml of water in the soil out of which 600ml seeps down so v can say that
amount of water retained=400ml
amount of water percolated=600ml
